Meet Leyla Cemal

In this month's 'meet the designer' we decided to introduce you to the very beautiful Leyla Cemal. Leyla was one of the very first of the initial 10 designers who we launched with.  So as you can imagine we have a lot of love for Leyla and her jewellery.

Having started her self named jewellery line in 2012, Leyla's work and brand has gone from strength to strength, creating jewellery with a rustic yet refined look, Leyla's s style is natural shapes with sharp lines.  As a result what you have are pieces with an identifiable style for the modern woman, so lets get on and meet the lovely lady behind the brand!

Tell us a bit about yourself............
I am Leyla, I like cats and yoga and drink a lot of tea

 Where are you based?
In Bethnal Green, East London

How did you start in jewellery design?
I have always been creative and into making jewellery since I was very young. I became serious about it a couple of years ago and took some metalsmithing and wax carving courses at Holt's academy in Hatton Garden

What is you inspiration when you start making a piece?
I have a moodboard which I am constantly adding to set up above my workbench. Currently there are lots of pictures of space and magazine editorials that inspire me. I try to stay true to the basic aesthetic of my brand which is creating something unusual and not too girly. I like jewellery which is easy to wear, feminine, but with a bit of an edge

 Describe your workspace....
I currently have a workbench set up in my living room with my laptop on one side and all my equipment on the other and a mood board and pictures that are currently inspiring me above. I tend to spill out all over the house though, and have jewellery polishers in the kitchen and packaging materials all around. I'm not sure how it happens but by the end of the day there is stuff everywhere. I really need to work on that! What do you like to do to chill out in your spare time?
I like to go out to eat or have a nice glass of red wine and watch the telly

If you could design a necklace for anyone who would it be?
Alexa Chung. I really like her style and I think it matches my brand - unusual but simple and a little tomboyish

What’s your favourite item on The Lost Lanes?
I like the "I love cats" t-shirt by Hero&Cape, because I do love cats and if I wore it enough, perhaps it would convince my fiancĂ© that we need to get one!

I am in love with two items in-particular, 'Date with the night' necklace and 'Sunset Ring' but you can find out more about Leyla Cemal and view her collection here.
